At STAND UK, we aim to provide young people with resources to help them combat institutional racism in an educational setting. We’re a committed team of three: Azhar Rahman, Maria Carmen and Muse Berhe. We have all attended the same secondary school and through shared experiences of institutional racism, we united to make a substantial difference. Azhar (21) and Muse (22) have left education, whereas Maria (17) is completing her final year of A-Levels.

 

STAND UK acknowledge the effects that racism can have on young people, and we wholeheartedly encourage anyone who is suffering through any racism to speak up to an adult they trust. Through shared experience, we know how troubling it can be for anyone to keep issues to themselves. It’s incredibly damaging for one’s mental health and can have negative effects on people as they progress further through life. Your emotions towards negative experiences are entirely valid and you should never be made to feel as if you’re being oversensitive.

 

We are planning on providing resources on many different platforms, so no matter what platform you feel comfortable with, you’ll be able to hear what we have to say. Our central hub will be our website, but we’ll aim to make engaging, relevant content for everyone on all our other platforms: Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Spotify and more! In future, we’re looking to branch outwards and grow as a non-profit organization.

 

We’re looking to establish a mentorship scheme, where we match students from underprivileged backgrounds to specific mentors depending on their needs, amongst other ideas.
